Bottle Palm

Scientific Name: Hyophorbe lagenicaulis

Appearance: Bottle Palms are fairly easy to identify given their swollen bottle shaped trunk. Bottle Palms thin out a little bit as they grow. They have up to 8 leaves at anytime that can each grow to up to 10 feet in length. A mature palm will average about 10 - 12 feet in height.

Growing: Bottle palms are slow growers that prefer well drained rich soil and thrive in tropical climates. These palms are killed at freezing tempuratures. They prefer partially shaded areas. They can grow in full sun, yet will require frequent watering. Young palms will grow happy in a large container as long as they are cared for properly.

The conservation status of the Bottle Palm is threatened and listed as critically endangered.
