Areca Palm Tree

Scientific Name: Chrysalidocarpus lutescens/Dypsis lutescens.

A.K.A: Eureka Palm, Butterfly Palm, Bamboo Palm, Golden Cane Palm

Identification: Fine textured fronds, slow to moderate growth rate and will average around 15 - 20 feet in height, but have been seen as large as 39 feet.  Arecas are clustering palms, and new trunks constantly sprout from the base. These trunks can be as thin as a straw or as thick as a large bottle of wine.

Growing: Areca Palms are commonly seen growing pool side in containers, but they will outgrow these containers eventually. They grow in both sun and shade. Great choice as a privacy screening or for a tropical look as hedges. This palm is moderately salt-tolerant. Becoming more popular as house plants because of their ability to clean the air.

Interesting Fact: According to NASA and Dr. B. C. Wolverton, the areca palm filters xylene and toluene from the air. Wolverton also specifies that, at 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) in height, the plant will transpire 1 liter of water per 24 hours, thereby making it an effective humidifier.
